Video Tapestry: Realtime Mobile Video Stitching Is So Crazy It Just Might Work

February 25th, 2009 Comments off

I got excited about this idea until I read “and of course all the timecodes on all the mobiles sending video have to be totally in sync.”…  Going out on a limb here but that be a small problem for this work anywhere other than in the lab!

Apple Announces Safari 4 Public Beta – Mac Rumors

February 24th, 2009 Comments off

I’ve been using early builds of the developers version of Safari 4 for months.  It’s rock solid, very fast and the only browser I know (yes, I’ve tested several, including Chrome) that passes the Acid Test 3 web compatibility test.  Making it one if not the most compatible browser available.  It looks like this beta brings new features that either haven’t been present in the dev builds or that simply haven’t found, such as Cover Flow history browsing, etc.  YUM!

Or you could do this right now by buying a copy of HoudahGeo and a compatible GPS tracker (just about any GPS tracker will do) and not have to wait for mythical iPhoto updates that might, or might not give you what you’re hoping for. Ahem.

Neo Scene for Mac allows editing of AVCHD video | Macworld

February 23rd, 2009 Comments off

Ahhhh.  I love the smell of marketing BS first thing in the morning.  The title of this piece is misleading as to almost be a flat-out lie.  It impliesthat this software lets you edit AVCHD directly.  Of course it doesn’t as editing compressed video without first decompressing it in some way is impossible. The piece then goes on to reveal that in fact all this app does is convert your AVCHD files to their own decompressed intermediate MOV format which you can then edit.  So where’s the news, because iMovie and Final Cut Pro both deliver the exact same functionality without the need to spend a dime.  FCP actually gives you choices over which intermediate format is best suited to your project.

I declare this to be un-news and not worthy of anybodies $129!  (Pftt!)

A brush with a "mind" of it's own

A brush with a "mind" of it's own

So now we have grown men and multi-million dollar corporations fighting over toothbrushes with tiny motors stuck to them…….   WTF?  Does anybody think this is patentable? (Well in the US who knows, you could probably get a patent for house numbers without too much trouble)….  It’s a goofy rainy afternoon kids project…  Yes Klutz (how appropriate) should give the guys credit, but royalties?  Patents???  It’s a toothbrush!  Maybe I should patent duct-taping a Swiffer to my cat and calling it a Meowba….  Grow up people.!

Microsoft wants refund from some laid off workers | Microsoft – CNET News

Then of course there’s this gem from the “giving” folks in Redmond.  Do the laid-off employees get to take advantage of the free IT training programs or is MSFT going to take that away from them too.?  Brought to you by the hand that keeps on taking – Microsoft.

Microsoft aims to ‘Elevate America’ | Microsoft – CNET News

February 22nd, 2009 Comments off

OMG!  They’re at it again!  Don’t get me wrong.  Helping people get the cyber-smarts they need to get jobs is a good thing, but are MSFT going to be teaching people how to run Unix or Linux (which is the backbone for most internet traffic) or even OS X?   What do you think??  I’m going to go out on a limb here and think that maybe they’ll just talk about Winblows.  Hmmmmm… Not at all self-serving….  Not at all like a big monopolist taking advantage of economic stress to find yet another way to lock people into their schtick…

Sorry Redmond…  Busted!

Cable: Online Cable Debate Heats Up As Execs Embrace Streaming Tech, Bicker About Programming Model

February 22nd, 2009 Comments off

Don’t know about you but I have no sympathy for the execs of record companies or media “outlets”.  They knew just when the rest of us did that everything content-wise was going digital and if they were too stupid to get off their asses and build a business model that would work in the new reality they deserve to go out of business or be replaced by people who do get it (yes, I mean you Apple). Sheesh!  How many breaks are we supposed to give these guys? Get out of your own way and let the smart people run the company!

SteamPunk Frankenstein casemod sure to anger Luddites – Engadget

February 22nd, 2009 Comments off

So don’t get me wrong..  I’m into the Steampunk thing.  Old is new.  Retro is Futro…  But guys….  Don’t you think the DVD and FLOPPY (who the hell uses floppy drives these days??) drives take you out of the moment a little?  At 8 feet tall, you couldn’t find space for them other than right in the middle of that well oiled edifice?  I’m mean seriously, they are all I can look at now….  It’s like having Sophia Loren and Shirley MacLaine on stage at the same time.  It’s just wrong and confusing!

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

Now I thought the first Transformers movie was pretty good.  No Oscar buzz there but a great popcorn flick.  The teaser for the sequel has me a little more excited.  Looks it’s taking a bit of a darker twist.  The transformers have gotten a lot less cutesy and more bad-ass.  Heck if they keep this up maybe they can make Shia LeBeouf look butch.

There’s a great trailer over at the official move site www.transformersmovie.com enjoy!

Enough with iPhone App-o-the-week roundups!

February 22nd, 2009 Comments off

This might just be the curmudgeon in me coming out but 18 months after the launch of the iPhone (I have 2 I love them too), do we really need every tech blog on the planet to be publishing weekly round ups of “the best” apps of the week?  They stopped being interesting after like week 3 and now they’re just plain annoying.  Kind of like BowFlex TV ad annoying.  Kind of like if Christmas or (insert holiday of choice here) came every week not just once a year, you’d stop caring, annoying.  Stop it already!  Enough!  We know the iPhone has an app store, we know some apps are better than others.  Stop taking the fun out of us finding out for ourselves..  What next, an Engadget twitter service that tells you what Santa is leaving under the tree?   Ugh…

Proposed law might make Wi-Fi users help cops | Macworld

February 22nd, 2009 Comments off

How many times have we got to go around this loop?  No body is saying that offenders (especially of child related crimes) should get an easy ride but this isn’t the answer!  It’s been debated god knows how many times in recent years but yet again Republicans from Texas bring it up, wasting the house’s time when then should be focused on getting our country back on its feet.

It’s amazing to me that 15 years on law makers STILL don’t “get” the internet.

What is Woz thinking?  I guess the guy is bored or something because I can’t for the life of me understand why someone in his position would want to cha-cha-cha around with a bunch of C & D list “celebs” (Sorry Kathy!)…

My advice to Woz is – Stick to your Segway!

Telekon – Reduxed…….

The 2006 Teletour Redux

The 2006 Teletour Redux

Those who know me, know I love Gary Numan…. Have for 30 years, prolly always will… However… I recently missed attending his Telekon Tour anniversary extravaganza. A sin for which I will never forgive myself. However I did fess up the required dosh to purchase Gazza’s DVD of said event.

The original 1980 Teletour. The set was amazing

The original 1980 Teletour. The set was amazing

I will always love Numan….. But why? OH Why???? Did Gazza only use that fab LED recreation of the original TeleTour set for only 5 of the songs???!!!! I mean I could understand it for the lesser numbers, but We Are Glass and I Die: You Die??? That was prime time for major on stage madness…. But the set just sat there, getting in the way. Not at all how I remember it almost 30 years ago…

You know, Gazza can do no wrong by me, but I would love to see him get out of his own way so that his talent and legacy could carry him on through to a brighter place. You’re never gonna do that by kidding your fans that they’re getting TeleTour then not turning on the friggin lights! Come on.. You already rented them, use them!

Send in Pain…
