Apple storms the UK!

May 8th, 2009

OK, call me a fanboi if you like but data is data and it’s hard to argue with numbers like these.

PC sales in the UK slid by 5.1% in the first quarter of 2009 while Apple’s sales grew by 6.6% during that same time. This trend really puts into question Microsoft’s whole premise that Macs are too expensive for the average guy/gal (whoever they are). Surely if that were the case Microsoft would have gained market share based on the sale of cheap netbooks. Not so.

Apple is for the first time in the top 5 personal computer vendors in the UK. The leader board now looks like this…

  • HP – 22.2% – Declined 6.8%
  • Dell – 20.3% – Declined 21.7%
  • Acer – 16.8% – Increase 40.6% (based on netbook sales)
  • Toshiba – 9.1% – Increase 7.7%
  • Apple – 4.8% – Increase 6.6%

Apple replaced Fujitsu Siemens for the 5th spot.

The market share study by Gartner Group goes into more detail about movements in the market across all of Europe. Its author Ranjit Atwal made the following observations.

“If it had not been for the mini notebooks, all of Western Europe would have seen a bigger decline in shipments,”

“This is a clear indication of the trend that we will see in other countries through 2010,” added Atwal. “The consumer market remained buoyant driven by strong mini notebook demand, and numerous vendors increased their mini notebook shipments during the quarter.”

It looks like Apple is able to not only buck this overall trend in declining sales but actually grow its business with very healthy percentages given the uncertain economies around the world.

Now how much is that worth Mr Ballmer?
