Elgato – The Good, The Bad & The Old News – Apple Mac DVR
Now for many years (much as it irks me to say it) Microsoft has had the best media center on the planet with the MCE capabilities built into XP Media Center Edition 2004 and beyond.
The Mac has always been the bridesmaid when it comes to personal computer based DVRs. AppleTV and iTunes are real nice an’all but you still can’t record your fave TV shows with them without investing in more hardware and software or buying them after the fact from El Jobso.
Recording analog video to your Mac has been available forever. Now long time Mac TV recording enabler Elgato (love the name, I have cats too) has introduced the latest in their line of USB connected video capture solutions. Capture is old skool RCA (sorry, phono for you Brits) jacks and S-Video as the high-end option. There is software to export to MPEG4 H.264 but nothing in the “blow your mind” department.
Elgato, we love you, but wake us up when the satellite and cable loving HD fun begins, OK?
Elgato Video Capture allows Macs to record analog video.
