Jackson dies, the web, Twitter and iTunes fail under the load #mj
The second incident in a week that has strained the internet’s infrastructure almost to it breaking point. Following the Iran stories of last weekend, the news of the sudden death of Michael Jackson brought site after site to a grinding halt as fans and the public rushed to their favorite web sources to find out more.
Not only was the web impacted but other services like Twitter failed repeatedly under the load. Not least of which was iTunes which saw Jackson albums take 9 out of the top 10 album spots yesterday. My own attempts to purchase his “Number Ones” album became very frustrating as constant service errors dragged what should have been a 5 min download out to well over an hour.
Jackson’s financial troubles have been the source of much speculation for years. One commentator on CNN made the point that his death would actually increase the size of his estate dramatically, providing a secure future for his 3 children. Shame the man had to die to get back into the charts. We all loose.
